devotional chanting from many spiritual traditions.
Prema Rupa – Form of Love –
draws upon soulful songs honoring the Divine Presence from the traditions of Hindi and Sikh kirtan, Sanskrit and Buddhist chanting.
THE PREMA RUPA KIRTAN EXPERIENCE
Prema Rupa does not perform, but rather facilitates the kirtan chanting experience for yoga practitioners, devotees of the Divine, and those who may want to integrate chanting as sadhana - daily devotional practice.
Kirtan is integral to most yogic paths. It is musical japa – repetition of the Sacred Name – with the group experience increasing the value of the practice for every participant.
The chant leaders render simple phrases, usually in Sanskrit or Hindi, allowing equal measure for the "mirror response" of the participants in the session, typically lasting 11/2 to 2 hours.
The purpose of the kirtan sangha (chanting group) is a shared experience of concentration in
the joy of sacred music.
PREMA RUPA MUSICIANS
Debbie Elman and Greg Davis are the main facilitators of Prema Rupa. They are experienced chant leaders and musicians for Paramahansa Yogananda's Self-Realization Fellowship. Having had a dream of sharing the joy of chanting with our local community, and believing that if we dive deeper into the devotional aspects of our spiritual practice, we can experience the peace and healing effects that come from opening our hearts to the Divine. Prema Rupa offers kirtan workshops, public performances and monthly informal chanting sessions. Debbie and Greg have performed kirtan together for many years.
Prema Rupa was originally formed by Debbie and other musicians in the 1990's in order to deepen their experience of kirtan and bhajan, as well as to explore more traditional Indian music. Greg joined the group in 2005. The instruments that accompany the Prema Rupa musicians include harmonium, tamboura, tabla, cymbals and bells, keyboards, Tibetan bowls and other percussive instruments.

From the ancient traditions of India, there is a rich heritage of devotional chanting known as Kirtan. This devotional practice utilizes singing to harmonize the body, mind and breath, by relieving stress, awakening the heart and promoting a sense of wellbeing and peace.
